In the last 7 years sizes of external doors in newly constructed Kenyan homes have been increasing year over year until recently. According to my experience working in Euro door since early 2017 the standard door sizes were smaller than our standard sizes in stock
This was an average of 1100 mm wide by 2200 mm high for double swing steel security doors and about 880 mm wide and 2200 mm high for single doors. Whenever we went for installation, we were forced to increase the height of the door spaces so long as it did not touch the beam. In these earlier years of Euro door setting base in Kenya, I was lucky to visit more than 500 middle to high-end ongoing home construction
This was from Membly Estate, Ruiru, Karen, Runda, and Kitengela to name just a few. I have always asked myself at what point are these door sizes decided. Is it the architect or is it the owners of the homes pushing for bigger and taller doors?
From years 2019 to 2021, we realized that the height of doors started to increase exponentially. Come 2022 I recall we went to install the door at one site in Runda and found that the allocated height was 2.7M! In some cases, the width was as wide as 2600mm!
This trend was replicated in almost all the other estates in Nairobi namely Kitengela,Syokimau, Karen, Kenyatta Road, and many others. At this stage, our standard door size of 2400mmH could not keep up with these heights. Luckily the top part of our doors is made up of heavy steel and the masons can built on top of it to cover the gap.
The door shown in the pictures on this page was a special custom-made steel door for a customer based in Karen. It's 2000 mm wide by 2500 mm high. It has also a side glass panel with a laser-cut grill.
Modern design – Creates a grand, sophisticated entrance.
More Natural Light – Allows better illumination with integrated glass panels.
Trending Choice – According to Fixr, approximately 60% of experts identify tall doors as a leading trend for front entrances in 2025.
However, the main drawback of this trend is that the bigger the door the more the cost, and also waiting time for customization is more than 70 days.
However, in Kenya starting the year 2024 and 2025 this trend has declined sharply as construction activities for luxury homes slow down as a result of the status of the economy. We are currently stocking a maximum height of 2300mm or 2400mm and a width of 1500mm. Most homeowners do not exceed these dimensions as they try to balance between luxury and the increasing cost of construction. This has been fueled by inflation.
